Cleaning Your Electrostatic Furnace Filter

Electrostatic Furnace Filter Maintenance

Cleaning an electrostatic furnace filter or air conditioner filter is very simple and should not deter anyone from trying one of these filters in their hvac system. You Simply remove the filter from your furnace or air conditioner and rinse it with water. There are no special cleaners required and the process is really not even messy. The rinsing can be done in a laundry tub if you have one that is big enough or you can take the filter outside and using a garden hose rinse it thoroughly from one side and then the other until the water that comes out the opposite side of the filter is clear. It couldn't be any easier.

Some people just use a vacuum cleaner and vacuum the filter once each month but this only removes the dust that is near the surface of the filter and filtration will quickly begin to deteriorate with this method. Also, remember that the electrostatic characteristics of the filter really create a resistance to dust removable using this method. The other draw back of not getting the filter completely clean each time is that you will have to clean the filter more often. So it is best to do it properly each time.

What To Look For In An Electrostatic Furnace Filter

  • Choose an electrostatic filter that does not use polyester. These filters are much easier to clean.
  • Choose a filter with anti microbial protection. This helps to control odor and control the growth of mildew, bacteria and mold.
  • The filter should have a PVC or similar type of frame. These are sturdy and don't corrode or rust.

The simple maintenance instructions at the beginning of the article are all that is required to keep an electrostatic furnace filter working at maximum efficiency. No contractors required, just do it yourself.

Choosing A Filter For Home Use
When selecting a filter for home use it is important to determine what your objectives are. There are many different types of filters to choose from. Some are very efficient and stop the smallest of particles while others are very inefficient and are a total waste of your hard earned money.

Your Air Conditioner Filter Does More Than One Job
What many people don't realize is that an air conditioner filter does more than one job. It prevents the evaporator coil from becoming plugged with dust, which restricts airflow and reduces the efficiency of your heating and cooling equipment.
